Since I started working again I’ve been having the hardest times waking up in the morning. None of my previous solutions of getting my ass up and out of bed haven’t been working. Here’s a list.
- Setting multiple alarms in series on my Hiptop. I just dismiss it, delete the rest in the series and go back to bed without knowing it.
- Zen alarm clock. I’ll get up, dismiss, go back to bed. It does not blissfully wake me up anymore.
- Sticking my Hiptop on the other side of the room. Will dismiss and go back to bed.
- Having multiple different alarms go off at once. I just go back to sleep after I dismiss them all.
I would love to build something like this, but can think of too many ways to disable/mute it while still half a sleep. I’m hoping that someone has found some easy to buy solution to this that they could recommend to me.
Some would suggest better sleeping habits, I’ve try almost everything I hear about. The only thing that’s worked thus far as the 90 minute cycles, and I’ve been reading recently that it’s mostly moot as everyone has a variable “time to sleep” which throws off when you want to wake up.
I’m becoming more tired during the day, it’s very noticeable, which is why I need to do something about this now.

When my brother joined the military, he had really bad problems getting up on time. He bought a battery-powered alarm clock that was louder than Jesus, and then his wife constructed a box with holes drilled in it that would let sound out, but wouldn’t let him reach the snooze button on the alarm. This box was then sealed with a combination lock and placed on the other side of the room.
It was about the only thing that worked for him.
I used to use a binaural generator – sbagen to both put myself to sleep and wake myself back up. Took some tweaking to get right – but in the morning it was great – no alarms just a realization that I was awake at some point. I didn’t bother with headphones – speakers on each side of the head was enough.
This seems interesting, I’ll look over this during lunch. Thanks.
The problem with alarm clocks is that we get used to them. No matter what complicated methods are used, we always figure out some way to get around them and sleep more. Maybe, it just needs to be unpredictable. Every morning it does a new thing at random. One morning – burst into pieces and not stop until you put the puzzle back together. Another time – math. Another time – rolls away. And of course have different noises every time.
A randomly generated puzzle would wake me up. The issue is that its power source needs to be fool proof. I remember that Ian was talking about something like this, built into a metal case, that was bolted into the wall so it wouldn’t as simple as pulling its plug to disable it.
Maybe this
or this?
Do you know Rose? She had sleep troubles and got one and was tracking the data it gave her on her lj for a while.
If it’s a long term problem, I’d also say going to the doc to see if you have an undiagnosed sleep disorder might be worthwhile.
There’s also sunrise alarm clocks like this one: http://www.toolsforwellness.com/62074.html
Wee, that might actually work well if I didn’t allow myself to throw a blanket over it. :P
Ian has a rolly clock, he says they’re too easy to catch.
I use a Zen alarm and my phone – I don’t get up and shut the Zen alarm off, and it’s continuous sound keeps me semi-awake enough to make somewhat better decisions about the snooze on the phone alarm.
I’ve been able to sleep through the zen alarm just fine since I’ve gotten it. I can also get up and kill it then go back to bed without actually knowing it, sadly. :(
Glad it works for you.
man i wish i had this problem. i set the alarm, but it almost never gets to go off. at some point i get tired of watching the clock slowly move toward the alarm, and i just get up and turn it off, and start my day.
if i am really exhausted, or ill, then sometimes the alarm gets to wake me up.
I find that going to bed earlier, rather than later helps me. If I go to bed exhausted and have to get up semi-early, I’ll wake up exhausted too. When I am more in control of when I choose to go to sleep, I have more control over when I get myself up too.
Before falling asleep I imagine what it will be like in the morning when the alarm goes off, mentally preparing for it.
I look at the benefit to myself when I actually get up when my rational mind has calculated to be a good time. I program myself to get up, almost without thinking about it.
Having a sense of completion about the nights sleep helps too. Being honest about when you’re actually going to get up, even if it’s tough.
Feeling ready to begin the day is more important to me than whether or not I’m still tired.
This past week I have been finding a way of being positive before getting out of bed. It has really helped me start my day rather then end my sleep.
How about getting people to call you in the morning? Or waking up to mariachi that can’t be turned off? Or a timed ice bucket?

my way
I have a problem with hitting the snooze button too.
here’s how I fixed it…
I set my computor or ipod to play some rather chill music about half an hour before my alarm goes off. It has to be chill like morning happy music, not ambient space cadet. I reccomend Rena Jone or Dr. Toast.
This way, i’ve already had that half an hour ‘warning’ that it’s time to wake up… it gives me a chance to let go of the dream i was in and be ok with getting up with my alarm.
I also try to be conscious of knowing that I wake up easier the more sleep I get. If I know i’m only going to get 4 hours of sleep, I choose something like The Books or metamatics.
How about something like this

When it rings the propeller flies off and it won’t stop until you retrieve it and put it back.
Try this…

i really want to give the glo pillow a whirl.
i’m sure some kind of DIY hack could be done, to get it to be your bed itself: your blankets, your fitted sheet, your pillow, all alit, you surrounded in a halo of light, unable to escape back into sleep, bwahahahahaha…
err. um.
yeah. something like that.
